Nairobi Becomes East Africa’s New Music Capital as Sony, Universal and Warner Move In.

By LLK Digital

Nairobi is set to become East Africa’s biggest music business hub after Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group committed to establishing offices in the Kenyan capital.

The announcement followed a meeting between President William Ruto and IFPI CEO Victoria Oakley, marking what could be one of the most significant investments in Kenya’s creative economy. While timelines and investment figures have yet to be announced, the move signals growing global confidence in the country’s music industry.

For years, Lagos and Johannesburg have been the preferred African bases for major entertainment companies. Nairobi’s selection reflects Kenya’s rapidly expanding digital economy, strong mobile infrastructure, strategic location and growing influence as East Africa’s commercial gateway.

The arrival of the “Big Three” could reshape opportunities for Kenyan artists, bringing global distribution, publishing, artist development, licensing and A&R services closer to home. It also has the potential to strengthen the wider creative ecosystem, benefiting producers, songwriters, managers and other music professionals.

The move comes as Sub-Saharan Africa remains the world’s fastest-growing recorded music market, fuelled by streaming and increasing global demand for African music.

Kenya is not new to the global music conversation. Several artists have already secured partnerships with international labels, including Sauti Sol, Nikita Kering’, Njerae, Keemlyf and Juanita Tunu, all of whom have worked with Universal Music Group in various capacities. Their success has demonstrated the international potential of Kenyan talent and laid the foundation for broader industry investment.

Whether these new offices become true centres for artist development or primarily regional licensing hubs remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Nairobi is no longer simply producing talent—it is positioning itself to become one of Africa’s most important music business capitals. □
